REPORTING RACIAL INCIDENTS IN SCHOOLS

DOES THE SYSTEM YOUR SCHOOL USES WORK?

The Annual Report for reported racial incidents in the academic year 2008-2009 was published by Education Bradford earlier this year.

Schools have a duty to report racial incidents to Education Bradford under the Race Relations Amendment Act 2000 and the Education and Inspections Act 2006. It is also a requirement under OFSTED.

They must do so as soon as they happen. The annual report does identify pupils or individual schools; the information is aggregated and anonymous.

It helps schools identify the nature of the racial incidents and particularly those groups which are the most vulnerable.

It also informs us whether racial incidents are increasing or decreasing-this is especially important at present with the increasing activity of the BNP in many areas.

It is therefore vital that schools make the process simple and easy for staff to report such incidents, making the reporting forms easily accessible.
